This book got me through the first few days of Lockdown 3. I curled up on the sofa and read it morning, noon and night. I’ve struggled to read as much during this pandemic. Concentrating has been hard. But I had no trouble with John Boyne’s brilliant book. The author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Boyne tells the story of Cyril, raised by adoptive parents in 1950s Dublin. The book spans his life, his loves, his friendships as he tries to find his place in the world. The characters are wonderful. You feel as if you know them intimately. The story made me gasp in places and laugh out loud in others. I’m saying little about the plot because you need to be drawn in, like I was, and disappear into this wonderful story. Perfect lockdown reading.
This is one of my favourite books…I absolutely loved it when I first read it a good while back and have recommended it to many friends. It is one of the very few books that I have re-read. I couldn’t read anything during the first Lockdown ..really strange..
but now am happily reunited with my love of reading!
Same here. I can read again thank god

I just love this story. Thanks man! You’re the very best lady!!!😁
Thanks for recommending – The Heart’s Invisible Furies, so enjoyable I bought half a
dozen copies for close friends. I think you might enjoy – This is Happiness by Niall Williams
which has the same wit and poignancy as THIF.
So glad I found your site. This book is one of seven of your recommended books that I absolutely loved. Quite a simple, language style, at times shocking, moving and amusing. A full life story, immersive and in a small way similar to Any Human Heart. Wonderful!
Thank you for all your comments. I’ve been a bit lax about adding new books recently. I will put some more up. Sophie
