Me Before You by JoJo Moyes

I can’t remember how I came across this book but it was some years ago and it had only just come out. It’s the story of Will – a high flying city guy – who’s left paralysed after an accident and has moved home to his parents house in the country to be looked after. They employ Lou – a local girl – to care for him. But he doesn’t want looking after – he doesn’t want to keep living. The book’s about the bond that develops between them and his determination to die. What I love about this book is that when she wrote it, Jojo Moyes thought that the subject matter was so tricky that the book wouldn’t go down well and it could end her writing career. In fact Me Before You took off – through word of mouth – and has become an international bestseller and now film. I’ve read lots of Jojo’s books since then, she’s even become a friend, but this one is still my all time favourite. I have bought so many copies of if for people and given it to them with one warning: don’t read the second half on public transport.

  1. A really meaty story which dealt with a most difficult subject with honesty and compassion. Some of our book group members thought it was “just Chick Lit”, but we were all surprised at how substantial a read it is.

  2. Loved this book, the characters, the plot twists. Everything about it. Have the next 2 in the series but am saving them as silly as it sounds. Because once they’re read, they’re read! Keep up the good work Sophie! Love a good book site. Are you on goodreads?
